De Dennen

De Dennen is the largest forested area on Texel, planted in the early 20th century primarily with pine trees for timber production. Today, this woodland—managed by Staatsbosbeheer—serves as a nature and recreation area, with added deciduous trees, open clearings, and wetlands to boost biodiversity. In early spring, snowdrops carpet the forest floor, remnants of 1930s bulb cultivation, alongside wild arum lilies and lords-and-ladies. The forest has introduced new bird species like the great spotted woodpecker, goldcrest, and tawny owl, while woodcocks perform courtship flights in spring evenings. Autumn brings an abundance of mushrooms, including the distinctive narcissus flycap.

Visitors can walk, cycle, or ride horses through the tranquil trails. Free barbecue spots and picnic areas are available, with toilets near the play meadow and barbecue site.
