IJzeren kaap

The IJzeren Kaap stands as one of Texel’s most distinctive maritime landmarks, designed in 1864 by architect Quirinus Harder. This 15-metre-tall iron structure was built to guide ships safely past the treacherous sandbanks near the island, serving as a daymark when aligned with Oosterend’s church tower. Unlike traditional lighthouses, its open skeletal design was an innovative choice, resistant to the corrosive effects of the Wadden Sea’s salty air. Though decommissioned as a navigational aid, the IJzeren Kaap remains a striking symbol of Texel’s seafaring history.

Visitors can climb its 153 steps for panoramic views over the island and the Wadden Sea, while the adjacent visitor centre offers insights into its role in Dutch maritime heritage.
