Fort Lunette on Texel is a 19th-century auxiliary fort built in 1811 under Napoleon Bonaparte’s direct orders to defend the strategically vital Marsdiep and Reede van Texel. Positioned along the wadden dike near Oudeschild, it formed part of a defensive line with Fort de Schans and the harbour, its artillery aimed westward to block access to the Hoge Berg and Den Burg. After losing military significance in 1922, the fort’s earthen walls were partially removed in 1931, though its moat remained. Restored in 2010 by Natuurmonumenten, the ramparts—though lower than the original—offer a glimpse into Texel’s military past.
